PIRLS 2021 is the fifth assessment, providing trends in reading achievement over a 20–year period. Based on comprehensive framework, PIRLS provides international comparative data about how well children read after four years of primary schooling. More than 50 countries are participating in PIRLS 2021.

Saudi Arabia takes part in PIRLS because it helps to assess the achievement of elementary stage students in reading and writing. It also examines the similarities and differences between Saudi Arabia’s educational system and the educational systems of other participating countries to enhance teaching and learning in the Kingdom.

Test Administrator training will take place March – April 2021. On the day of the test, the School Test Administrator will be required to administer the test and pupil questionnaires, complete a pupil register, ensure test materials (including completed school and teacher questionnaires) are packaged and securely stored ready for collection. PIRLS 2021 will begin data collection in the Southern Hemisphere in October 2020. Sixty-one countries and 7 benchmarking systems are participating in PIRLS 2021, with 30 countries and 6 benchmarking systems administering PIRLS as a digital assessment, which includes ePIRLS, an assessment of online informational reading.
